Democratic Convention media coverage

... cover the activities, news, commentaries and analyses about the news media.

by Silverstringer

Friday, January 30, Ellen Hume of UMass Boston and Seth Effron of Harvard honored the Melrose Silver Stringers with a visit. They are working on a project to provide a daily newspaper of happenings at the Democratic Convention to be held in Boston, July 2004.

Why such a visit? To get pointers on how to use the MIT program used to publish the Melrose Mirror each month. This program is used worldwide but it does require a bit of learning to activate it. They must create folders (sections), a user list of those authorized to access the program, various baskets in which articles will be stored for editing and eventually publishing.

John Averell, a Silver Stringer member, editor and on-site technical whiz used a projector connected to the PC and showed on a big screen how the Mirror was set up.

Then he opened the program they will use should they decide to use the MIT program. John had created a few examples of how they might use it. Many questions were asked, and they appeared to be delighted with what could be accomplished.

Ellen and Seth are connected to Universities in Boston, and students will become reporters to cover the activities, news, commentaries and analyses about the news media.

The Stringers assured them that we would be available for assistance when needed.
